I am a reasonably tolerant person. But progressives are so shrill, so hate-filled and intolerant, that I've sworn off of ever voting for a democrat again. As excessive as that may be, it still doesn't measure up to what progressives have been doing.

"I did not vote for Trump, but I spent much of last year in the company of people who did, including non-white people and women (and even some non-white women!), and it strikes me that the people who chalk up his popularity to bigotry are confusing the effects of a handful of his policies with the values of his supporters."

Ben, I'm Black and I did not vote for Trump or Harris. But I know many working class Black ppl who voted for Trump and their reason isn't to be racist. It was working class concerns: the economy, etc. So many things the Democrats focused on were luxury causes.

Bravo Ben! I also am not a Trump supporter but came to the same conclusions you have. If the Democrats don’t come to realize this soon, they are sowing a divide that is going to harm them a lot more than the Trump supporters. America only survives as a moderate nation; Anything else will be our demise.

".....and (emotionally) genuine." As counter intuitive as it seems, this is spot on.

Dam Randy , you hit it right on the head particularly union workers who in my case our local is about 85 % pro Trump economic policies.

The Democrats are basically forsaken millions of union voters, especially construction, manufacturing, and even the union president of the teamsters would not support Kamala.

Why, in the world, the democrats abandoned all of these generational workers is beyond me, but they did and now they don’t know why we don’t support them anymore.

And to be even more, Frank, a lot of the guys I know Dont don’t personally like President Trump, but the option is even worse. And so here we are in 2025 and the Democrats still don’t get it..

“…matriarchy is an option.”

Lots of things including matriarchy are “an option”. It doesn’t mean any of them are good options.

Eventually Democrats will have a presidential candidate. But pushing back on Trump is an effort that requires lots of people including the cringey and annoying. It’s less about the political work to changed minds and more about the ongoing effort to maintain a civil society separate from the impacts of his lies and threats. I’ve never seen an American president inspire such widespread fear by other leaders in society and what you decry as hollow resistance matters to maintaining that space before the political system can act to correct the imbalance.

One bit of advice for the never Trump Democrats. You must understand that your version of democracy favors the so-called rights of minorites, no matter how extreme their demands. rather than the rights of the majority. This makes the party profoundly anti-democratic since democracy by definition is government by majority. They need to realize that the only rights of any minority that need to be protected in a democracy are the rights associated with an effort to become the majority or at least one group in a coalition that rises to the majority. Extention of rights to trans has nothing to do with whether a polity is democratic or not.

DT is not the least bit charismatic, the least bit funny, or the least bit genuine to me. I can't stand to hear him speak. He disgusts me as a human being
